An Introduction to Spirit Lights Classwork
***Take your personal psychic development to the next level - and
beyond - with Spirit Lights Classwork, from Psychic Medium Pat Chalfant...
There are certain concepts that are mentioned frequently in the work I do with people in Spirit Lights Live classes and this is an
attempt to list at least some of the more important ones. I hope this helps eliminate some uncertainty and/or confusion for you.
"Do Unto Others as Ye Would Have Them Do Unto You."
If you think you recognize that statement, you're right - it's our old friend, The Golden Rule, that I've just invoked. It's that ages old
statement of belief and conduct that has been stated in dozens of ways in all of the major religions. I found several pages of Golden
Rule statements, identified according to which church/temple/mosque each one belonged to, and I
was amazed at the number of ways this simple concept can be put into words.
Please don't think of this precept as a "religious" one. It is, rather, a universal fact of our existence. It is truly the central theme
of what I teach but I had never thought of it that way until recently. Most people think it's a pleasant little statement
to make and it would be nice if people really did that, but they don't most of the time, etc., etc.
But the Golden Rule is not just an "It Would Be Nice If…" statement. It's a command-it's typically stated as a command, even
in the dozens of different versions of it that I have from different religions. It is always a command. It is active!!! It is essential that you
learn to do this, as quickly as possible in your life. This statement actually is determining already what kind of life you're having.
It's a universe builder. Which brings me to our purpose for what we're doing in this class. We are not just becoming mediums
(psychics), we are not mere "empire builders" like politicians of old. We are building a universe.
A writer who's a friend of mine, Robert J. Grant, who is an expert in death and dying, has a book called Universe of Worlds
which is about the fact that we live forever. (You can read my interview with Robert Grant right here.) This phrase comes from
the Edgar Cayce readings and can be found toward the end of the book where he outlines the future that we all have in
store: we will each, in our own time, develop spiritually until we actually become a savior of some world in this "Universe of
Worlds." This is a long-range development, you understand, probably requiring at the very least, centuries in earth time,
in case you're not eager for that kind of responsibility any time in the immediate future.
When you wonder what you were meant to do in this lifetime, perhaps it is simply to develop (as Edgar Cayce,
The Sleeping Prophet said) more and more of the traits needed to be saviors.
Some people call this the Christ Consciousness. I wish we could find some designation other than "Christ," simply because
there is such prejudice in this world that many turn away from that word, just as many turn away from the
word "God." The reasons may not be the same, but the result is the same.
Many of those turning away from the word "Christ" think it means only "Jesus" but the word Christ is a word that means a
state of advanced spiritual development sometimes described as becoming an advanced Master-Masters being evolved souls
who have "mastered" earth's trials and tribulations and learned to follow the Golden Rule in the majority of the moments of their lives.
I am comfortable with the word "Christ" only because I see it as a master pattern that each of us carries within, a pattern that
encodes within us the promise of eternal life, the way in which we will develop infinitely, never-endingly, by personal choice.
This provision within us holds infinite creativity, infinite variety, and allows for whatever our needs may be at any given moment
to be taken care of for us in ways which we alone may choose. It carries within itself at all times the many different
time lines that we might choose for our futures, also, even when we do not recognize that such options exist for us.
The beauty of this pattern is that because it is ever present, ever available to each of us at each and every point at which
we are stepping forth into our futures, we can simply ask it, by whatever name we wish to call it, which way we should go. We
can ask this great pattern that is our Web of Life to show us the way that we need to proceed-what is the perfect one for us.
When I've done this, I have always far exceeded any success I might have felt previously I could hope for.
We can ask Spirit (God) for help every second if we need to. I became a believer in that kind of help long before I even was
sure there really was a God, by calling out, "God, if there is a God, please tell me what to do, rescue me from this situation in which
I feel I could ruin my life forever because I don't know how to keep it from happening." I immediately knew what I needed to do.
I did it and I was saved. No living person told me the answer. The entire description of what I must do simply appeared within
my consciousness instantaneously. So my learning this didn't even rest on a firm belief in God at
that time, but God was there for me, in spite of my disbelief.
I understand God to be everything everywhere in the universe. God is where the sole of my shoe puts itself upon the ground (both
the shoe sole and the ground are God) and will always be that wherever I go in this universe, as my feet (metaphorical or actual) move
me through this universe. God or Spirit is the All of what I see, what I feel, what I think, what I hear, touch, contemplate, imagine,
foresee, recall, and what I drink, eat, swim in, sleep upon--but you get the idea, I'm sure. And it is all that for
every single soul everywhere, for the unimaginably huge universe of souls.
In Spiritualism the term Spirit is used as a substitute for what I just outlined as my meaning of God. It is used particularly by
Spiritualists when they refer to the dead, but it also means those living here upon earth. Spiritualists will often say that Spirit gave
them such-and-such a message. They will refer to their loved ones who have passed to the Other Side as being in Spirit or being Spirit.
I've sometimes felt that all too many who profess to believe in Spirit speak as if everything that ever happens to them is the
result of the influence and design of those on the Other Side of life. There are even statements to that effect
which you'll find in some of the training manuals for would-be Spiritualist mediums.
Thank fortune, there are also training manuals which point out that we must not constantly pester those on the Other Side
who are our teachers and guides for help with every single, little thing. So many of the dilemmas of daily living can be resolved
without Spirit help by just by putting one foot in front of the other and getting on with life. Spirit is always there for us, but we often
don't need their kind of help because we know how to do our jobs. We have an accumulation of book knowledge and experiences by
which we've learned much in life that we can fall back on when we're stuck in ordinary ways. It's such a good feeling to know we've
finally solved a life problem we've worked on for a while, kind of like doing a jigsaw puzzle. It's good for us all to make that effort
on our own so that we can have the satisfaction of claiming the victory. That's healthy living. We can save our spirit helpers
for the really difficult puzzles, life, death, children's tantrums, miracles, broken hearts, and that kind of thing.
What is so often overlooked in this type of literature (Spiritualist) is that all of us living here on earth are also part of Spirit.
The difference between ourselves who are Spirit on earth and those called Spirit on the Other side of Life is negligible, in a way.
They can see a bit further than we can, so sometimes they can predict what, if we don't change our ways, could happen to us.
Those who become our guides are people of good character who have overcome some of the challenges we face and can
shepherd us through those, influencing us, as well as those around us, so that we may have a better outcome than we might
otherwise have. They try to make us see that we have a choice of paths to make, hoping to help us opt for the best one for ourselves,
even when we don't know that we have such an option. I often think that it must be hard work being a Spirit guide to an earth person.
Spiritualism rejected being identified as a Christian organization for one main reason. It's not that they dislike Jesus-they think
of him as a great master teacher and healer and perhaps one of the greatest mediums of all time, actually, because if we believe what
the New Testament sets forth, that's what he was. But Spiritualists can't tolerate the idea that he "died for our sins." One might almost feel it
was more than a little condescending of another entity to do such a thing. I've thought that at times. Not to mention the wonder of how
that could ever be possible. Somewhere I read a description of how this was supposed to work, but it seemed
so farfetched to me that I really couldn't quite credit it with any claim to reality.
It's the idea of "vicarious atonement" (dying for our sins) that really troubles them because Spiritualism is quite karma-oriented.
And that belief operates with the understanding that we all must atone for those shortcomings and deficiencies we have in
character (either because of things we have done or those we have left undone), all by ourselves. Those things are ours alone
to atone for. The Asian way of looking at these things is the one to which (if it can be pinpointed that way) Spiritualists adhere.
Actually, I just think you have to deal with the fact that reincarnation makes more sense out of the anomalies of this world
concerning equality of opportunity, the effects of disease upon mankind, the seeming shortsightedness of our laws and educational
and legislative systems, the prejudices and restrictions of all kinds upon man, the devastation of large scale disasters,
than any other single set of beliefs ever in existence.
Then it logically follows that the rest of the Asian concepts and viewpoints about past lives will also apply-the chakra energies,
the cause and effect of karmic energies, the development of psychic abilities based on the chakras' development as the vital
energies course through the various chakras and build greater and greater stores of energy in each one until the energy at the
base of the spine is one day fully unleashed, we have let all seven levels of energy into and through each chakra and we
are ascended, freed of living with only part of the knowledge we need and only part of our energies and potential realized.
I said earlier we were all to be involved in Universe building, and that is something that the author of A Guide to the Development
of Mediumship, Harry Edwards, has said. In fact, I hope you will take that statement to heart, because we are, in truth, reaching across
the great divide between earth and heaven and with the help of those on the Other Side, we are literally building our universe together.
Think of it! Among those people on the Other Side of Life are people who have been in our families and among those we've counted
as friends. Why would we want to deny them our love and friendship? Well, of course, there may be some we were a little "iffy" about--
but--seriously, people we knew and loved were cut off from us by having their physical bodies taken away from them so
that they could no longer speak and work and play as we do on earth and, in short, they couldn't live with us any more.
As Rudolph Steiner says in his book, 'Staying Connected', which is about how to continue the relatedness we've had with those
who have died, "To a far greater extent than on earth, a kind of universal human love arises in the dead. This does not mean that the
dead cannot criticize-that is to say, that they cannot rightly see what is evil in evil. They see it well enough but they are able to
refer it to its origins, to its real inner connections." Now that kind of thinking and understanding sounds
like the kind of person I'd like to have as a friend-dead or alive.
Truly, one of the effects in my own life since I've been doing this kind of work has been the inevitable changing of my attitudes
toward people, both living and dead. Then also in beginning slowly to actually try to live The Golden Rule, myself, it has seemed to
me that the dead are fully aware of the living and they totally try to be more charitable to us in many cases (The Golden Rule)
than we normally are to them. They literally encourage us and help us on our ways so that our lives may
be improved and facilitated, if we will allow them to.
One of the things that has struck me about the behavior of the dead toward the living has been the many times one hears
in a Spiritualist Church that some visiting spirit entity who comes from the Other Side to greet a friend or loved one during the
message portion of Spiritualist Church services wishes to be forgiven for his behavior toward the living while on earth.
I have even had one dead person come through another medium to apologize to me for having come too close into my aura
when I was in a development class. I was so grateful to hear this because I had been so frightened-experiencing severe panic
attacks for days and days because of it, and, even though I was so new to mediumship, I sensed that it was someone on the other side,
that it wasn't part of my own accumulated emotional baggage that was causing these feelings, as psychology tells us panic attacks are.
It was such a relief to actually accept this spirit person's apology and it cleared up completely a chapter in my life that I
hadn't known quite how to interpret or understand. It also reassured me that I wouldn't at some time have such
experiences start up again for me. I never did, either. That was 15 years ago or longer.
Know that each day we live and work spiritually, we can help not just ourselves to develop, but truly because experiments prove
that each thought of ours has literally a far-reaching physical impact on our world, so we all can, through the
control of our thoughts influence the growth of literally our entire Universe.
