Book Excerpts: "Spirit Lights a Path to Mediumship"
Book Excerpts From "Spirit Lights a Path to Mediumship"
Excerpt No. 1, from "Spirit Lights a Path to Mediumship" -
"This textbook will do exactly what its name suggests: it will lay out for you the path I took to become a
medium, how I became a medium strictly 'by the book,' and how you may, too.
"As I pass on to you what I learned there, I sincerely hope my experience will help you understand the process
better and have more faith in your own ability to do what's necessary to make you a dependable medium."
Excerpt No. 2, from "Spirit Lights a Path to Mediumship" -
"Mediumship develops in each person who studies it in a way that's unique to that individual. That's one of the exciting
(sometimes discouraging) aspects of it. The progress of it can be either fast or slow, but that timetable is as individual as
what "phase" (type) of mediumship the person may develop, which depends (according to tradition) on his
electro-magnetic-chemical makeup and/or his level of spirituality.
"I discovered that writing a textbook like this one is discouraging because I prefer the formulaic concreteness of such things
as recipes from which to work. For example, I want to be able to say that my 'Lesson One' has to be read before all the other
lessons because it is the absolute basis for all the others. However, that idea won't work with this subject matter
because of what I've just said-that everyone aspiring to be a medium develops uniquely.
"So although I introduce meditation (which I believe is fundamental) in the first lesson in the workbook--the truth is
that many people develop one or more phases of mediumship without ever meditating at all. It may
be other than ideal, the exception to the rule, but it does happen.
"The same thing can be said for every other element of mediumship, as well. One person may first develop the ability to hear
spirit voices with her spirit ears, or the ability to see symbols or actual scenes from the lives of others with her spirit eyes,
etc. It may be only later that the person learns how the guide's presence will be made known to her, however.
"The guide making himself known to the student is one of the absolute basics-a 'must'-in this work. Yet amazingly many people
who receive spirit guidance do not know the signs that indicate a guide is with them. Psychics, as opposed to mediums,
often receive information for clients from spirit guides but don't know that they are doing so. Trained
mediums definitely know they are receiving their information from spirit guides."
Excerpt No. 3, from "Spirit Lights a Path to Mediumship" -
"As you read this, you'll find information about the beliefs of Spiritualism, like Harry Edwards' beliefs, and information about
kinesiology, alongside ideas from the Edgar Cayce readings. You'll see what my studying and writing about past
life therapy, as well as my exposure to books about the Silver Birch mediumship, have contributed
to my knowledge, because all of these studies have influenced my beliefs.
"I always look for correspondences among the spiritual areas I explore and I often find them. It delights me to see how often
one spiritual discipline supports the tenets of another spiritual system. Each time I've discovered such correspondences,
it has always made my belief system just a little stronger than it was before. It has also helped me to keep
the balance between reason and intuition, as Spiritualism teaches we should do."
Excerpt No. 4, from "Spirit Lights a Path to Mediumship" -
"My husband, Jay, and I bought a house just before I went out on the road with a show long ago. An older British couple had
owned it and the man had just recently died. We found a book by Emanuel Swedenborg among the old books he'd left behind
and that seemed to indicate he might have had an interest in psychic phenomena. Shortly after we moved in, we started hearing
footsteps and rustling noises as if papers were being shuffled around in the spare room that we were using as a storage room.
It always seemed to happen at night, which is unnerving when you are about to fall asleep. I left in a few days to do
the show and Jay was left to the mercies of the paper-rustler!
"One weekend when he came to visit me after the show opened, he told me that late one night he had just had it with the uproar
in the spare room. He flung open the door and shouted that this was now our home and whoever was making the noise had to
clear out and leave him alone. He said a few of the kinds of swear words only men can use masterfully and
stormed out, slamming the door. He hadn't heard a single rustle since, he said."
Excerpt No. 5, from "Spirit Lights a Path to Mediumship" -
"So at the end of a negative day, think of those you love and send them your love and you can balance out all the bad things
that have surfaced in your mind during those twenty-four hours with just that one loving act. It would even seem that this is at
least part of the basis for the religious practice of daily prayer. In prayer, we typically pray for our loved ones as
well as whatever we may thank or ask God for, and particularly in the prayers at the end of our day."
Excerpt No. 6, from "Spirit Lights a Path to Mediumship" -
"It can't be stressed too strongly that what we come to this work believing will determine the outcome of the work for us.
Mediums, in particular, attract what they bring to their clients via the Law of Attraction. The medium's personality,
character, ethics, morality, his/her total personality, both what he believes and how he presents to others, his
hobbies, interests, all become part of his mediumship, at least to some extent.
"The Law of Attraction governs mediumship so completely that it really affects most of the areas of the medium's life as well
as each medium's reading performance. This influence starts with determining which guide will be drawn to a given medium.
"The overall characteristics of the medium will attract, so it is believed, the best guide for that medium. A more positive
medium attracts a more positive guide. The level of spirituality, as Spiritualists know, attracts a guide of like level.
The higher the level, the more positive the guide will be. However high that level may be determines
which level the readings of that medium will be given from."
Excerpt No. 7, from "Spirit Lights a Path to Mediumship" -
"Furthermore, from the early days when I first became interested in mediumship after I attended my first Spiritualist Church
I knew that the law kept an eye on Spiritualist churches because that first church's medium, Rev. Pearl Kerwin, told me that
she felt lucky to have several L.A. policemen that she read for. The reason, she said, was that they always warned her when
the "fraud" department people were going to visit Spiritualist church meetings to make sure the mediums were not "diagnosing"
without a license to practice medicine (that minister also proudly told me that some of Elvis Presley's close friends of the fair
sex regularly had readings from her--I remember trying to imagine what that might be like).
"Reverend Kerwin and I became friends over the years and I attended her loft-style church many times. Like many
Spiritualist ministers then her living room doubled as the church sanctuary. I played piano
for her services any number of times over the years."
Excerpt No. 8, from "Spirit Lights a Path to Mediumship" -
"As a medium, always give what you get. Just be precise and give exactly what you've seen, heard, and felt, then stop. Often
what seems to make sense to the medium does not mean a thing to the client and vice versa. For example, seeing a roof-even
if that symbol ordinarily means to you, let's say, that the person is going to be moving-should simply be given as you see it,
because it may also be literal and may mean that the roof on the person's house needs repair, for example. The client
will usually say that's the case when it is, if they are given the opportunity.
"Your guide may slip a new meaning in for an old symbol from time to time-which can be tricky. When that happens, or seems
to be happening, just remember to ask the guide if what it means is the usual interpretation and that, if it is, he should
bring it back (show it to you) again to confirm that. If the symbol doesn't return, ask that it be shown another way."
Excerpt No. 9, from "Spirit Lights a Path to Mediumship" -
"If what I'm setting forth here never helps those who study it in any way other than to make them believers in life after death,
that will be, in itself, enough of an accomplishment for me. Of course, some of us may not need that-we may believe in the
Continuity of Life already-but for those who are not sure, I hope this, and all that I do, will substantially aid in removing all doubt."

"I have been taking classes with Pat now for about seven months and my abilities have grown greatly. Before I started class
I had some abilities and did some tarot card reading but nothing like what I can do now. At first I would only get words but now I can
do full sentence readings that are right on. I feel like my abilities grow a lot every class. She helps me to control my abilities and use
them to the fullest. I'm excited to continue taking classes with Pat to see how much more I can progress." - Kristine Carlson, 10/13/2012
